How to Ask: The Penultimate Event

At a recent event - literally titled “How to Ask, and Get What You Want”, I had the pleasure of speaking about a topic that I’m truly passionate about: the art of asking. We explored why asking for what you want can be one of the most powerful tools in life—because you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. I shared my belief that, by putting your needs and goals out into the world, you’re inviting the universe (and the people around you!) to support you. It’s all about setting the stage for possibilities, creating connections, and opening doors you may not even know exist.

At the event, I dove into one of my favorite topics: the power of asking! I shared my belief that we often have nothing to lose and everything to gain by simply putting our asks out there. Why ask? Because if you don’t, no one knows how to help you! It’s all about letting the universe—and the people around you—know what you’re working toward. The more people who hear your goals, the higher the chances that someone out there can connect you with exactly what you need. It’s kind of like planting seeds and seeing what grows.

We also got into some real strategies for how to do this, both in person and virtually. From cold emails to LinkedIn messages, I broke down ways to reach out to potential mentors, collaborators, or supporters that actually work. It’s all about making that first contact genuine and authentic—people respond to honesty, and it can be amazing what a well-worded ask can accomplish.

And here’s the twist: asking isn’t just about getting something for yourself. I encouraged everyone to think about how they can help others first. Ask people how you can help them, and when you do, don’t be surprised if the support you get back multiplies. This kind of reciprocal connection is so powerful and a real game-changer.

Special thanks to my co-host Lei Bely-Cheng, a feller “Asker”, who envisions a future of empowered entrepreneurial minded folks that have the power to get what they want, whilst helping others. Here’s her recap of the event as well.

Finally, I had a chance to share my new program, “The Next Stage,” where I’m teaching people how to become better public speakers. If you’re looking to up your communication game and learn how to make impactful asks that inspire action, I’d love for you to join. Applications are open now, and it’s going to be a blast!
